MANILA, Philippines — As the Filipino-Chinese community and the whole nation celebrate Chinese New Year today, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed hope that this occasion may inspire everyone to “boldly set” their intentions and “confidently pursue” ambitions not just for themselves but for the greater good.

He described the event as a “radiant tapestry of cultural splendor,” symbolizing hope, renewal and the indomitable spirit of perseverance.

“As the Year of the Snake dawns, we are recalled to the virtues of wisdom, intuition, and transformation, calling us to embrace its promise of prosperity with courage and determination,” the President said.

“As we welcome a new year of self-improvement and good fortune, let this event inspire us to boldly set our intentions and confidently pursue grand ambitions not only for ourselves but for the greater good,” he added.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) shed 0.49 percent, or 36.67 points, to close at 7,400.33.

Moreover, Marcos hoped that the celebration may remind everyone that “every challenge is a chance for growth, and every effort, guided by clarity and resolve, is an opportunity to fulfill our shared aspirations.”

“Let the vibrant lanterns that illuminate our celebration also brighten our purpose as a nation,” Marcos said.

The President is optimistic that this auspicious time will reignite the nation’s commitment to new beginnings, fruitful endeavors, and unity.

“May the Year of the Snake guide us with its wisdom and empower us to move through life with grace,” he said.

Chinese New Year is the annual Chinese festival that runs for 15 days, beginning with the new moon, which, for this year, will occur from January 29 to February 12.

Based on the traditional Chinese calendar, or lunisolar calendar, which also incorporates the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, 2025 is represented by the snake.

The 11 other Chinese zodiac animals are the Ratwinhq, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
